Some use busyness as a signal of status, replying to ‘How are you?’ with “I’m just soo busy!” because it makes them feel important. I know FOR FACT I am a culprit of that statement. Often in the back of my mind there is a little voice saying ‘If you sound busy, they’ll think you’re successful!’
I want to let you in on a little secret. I’m not THAT busy. Yes there is a lot going on, but there could a heck of a lot more.
As much as it has been drilled into us that multi-tasking is a good thing, turns out that when working on multiple projects simultaneously there is a lack of focus to problem solve or consume new information. Which truly makes total sense; when thoughts are spread out it is harder to dive deep in focus on individual items and reach a clear conclusion. To counteract, it is suggested to work on one topic for a longer period of time before taking a short 5-10 minute break involving movement- not just phone-staring, before continuing with the task or moving on to the next task fully. I’m SO guilty of task jumping; doing a little of this a little of that and never really accomplishing much of anything in the 4 hours and 2 lattes I sat at the coffee shop “office.”
Another stressed point of separating yourself from the busyness is the ability to come back with a refreshed vigor, clear mind and bright ideas. In the hustle of trying to accomplish it all, studies have shown that we as a society settle for a quick answer to immediately satisfy the situation in lieu of an imaginative solution gained from allowing our minds to wander where they will in times relaxation. Now, by no means are those the wrong answer. Sometimes a quick decision, one of first instinct leads to the most grand of adventures… however sometimes there are massively overlooked opportunities or windows when there is no backing to the decision.
One statement has been weighing on my mind lately. It is totally cliché and very obviously a ‘word from the wise’ kind of phrase.
“You cannot pour from an empty cup.”
I’m going to repeat… You cannot pour from an empty cup. How is it possible to fill others souls, from an empty one? How is it possible to rejuvenate your business when your spirit is exhausted? Simply stepping away, for just a few hours even can bring such a revived outlook on things as a whole. I don’t want to turn this into a ‘here’s how to ___’ kind of thing, I’ve already mentioned what I do personally in an earlier post. See: https://valleyandoakevents.com/2019/02/18/what-is-helping/
Saying “Yes” to every potential opportunity is also a downfall I know I personally hold. In my want to succeed I cut myself short to truly beneficial opportunities. By not taking the time to really check the pros and cons of an opportunity I am choosing potentially terrible business choices. Opportunity is great- when it is the right one. Choose wisely, choose deliberately, choose with intention.
I bring this subject as a whole, up
here in Thoughts because it is a topic that has been weighing on my mind
lately: Busyness vs. Business.
I am not trying to just be busy and book whatever events come my way… I am
being deliberate and growing myself along with my business. I hope maybe this
helps reminds you in your own practices as it is mine.
Xoxo,
Kate
