Did you know that today, May 1st, is dubbed May Day in European countries…? Did you also know that another name for Lily of the Valley is Mayflower?
The story goes: Charles IX of France was charmed by the beautiful and delicious scent of the beautiful woodland wildflower, gave a nosegay (small bou
quet) of lily of the valley flowers to each of the ladies of his court on May 1, 1561, and it was an instant hit. Pleased with the result, he declared, “Let it be so every year,” and indeed, it was so. Soon the practice spread across France.
Over time, the tradition was that women would carry a nosegay of lily of the valley on May Day, while men would wear a sprig on their lapel. Superstition reigned at the time and it was believed that bearing the lily of the valley on May 1st brought health and happiness. A sprig bearing of 13 flowers was considered particularly lucky.
Although in Michigan we don’t normally see blooms until the end of May/ early June, I hope that throughout the month of May you are brought a bit of health, a lot of luck, and an abundance of happiness!
